The Blood Sugar Connection to Weight-Gain… Why We Really Get Fat!

We have all wrongly been led to believe that we have got fat because we are lazy and because we are consuming too many calories and eating too much fat, right?

We have been told to lose weight we need to eat less and do more: energy in equals energy out and if we want to lose 1 pound in weight a week, we need to consume 3’500 calories less and eating low-fat/high carbohydrate is the best way to get slim…hmmmm! This all seems so simple, easy to understand and follow, yet if this were true, why is obesity at an all time high, when many eat low-fat/calorie diets?

Zoë Harcombe, author of ‘20 Diet Myths-Busted’ has debunked the above myth. In her quest to uncover where the notion that 3’500 calories makes 1 pound of fat, Harcombe went to 7 different British health and weight management organisations, who promote this idea for weight loss. When questioned about the facts and research behind this theory, not one of the organisations could explain how the premise had come about, nor had they any research to back it up.

When one thinks about it, it really makes no sense. If it was true and we reduced our calorie consumption by 3’500 calories a week forever, we would eventually disappear…

Contrary to what most think, the majority of overweight people do not overeat and do too little exercise. Pick up a 10lb bag of potatoes and carry that round for a day, you will soon see that the person who is on average two stone overweight is doing ten times as much work as those not.

Many who struggle with their weight follow the low-fat, high carbohydrate way of eating, we were told is the only way to lose weight, yet find themselves getting fatter and fatter. The truth is, this way of eating, coupled with the massive amount of wheat in the diet, is the reason those of us in the Western world are overweight and unhealthy.

To better understand this I shall explain the blood sugar connection and the Glycemic Index:

The Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure of how quickly your body metabolizes different carbohydrates. The higher the GI of a food the more rapidly it is broken down and the faster it will spike your blood sugar and insulin levels.

It is common knowledge that sugar raises our blood sugars rapidly, but did you know that two slices of wholegrain bread raises it higher and faster than refined table sugar?

Complex carbohydrates are supposed to slowly break down into simple sugars when digested, which in turn leads to a slow release of sustainable energy. However, this is not the case with bread. Through glycemic testing, it was found that all types of bread are rapidly broken down into sugars after consumption (in fact, this breakdown starts whilst the bread is still in your mouth), leading to a huge sugar rush into the bloodstream.

High blood sugar is incredibly toxic to the cells of the body. If sugar levels rise too high and stay there, you will die. Therefore, to protect itself, the body has to find somewhere to put the sugar. The pancreas (producer of the hormone insulin), noting that the blood sugar is high elevates the insulin levels. Insulin is one of the primary hormones that stores fat and is known as the FAT-PRODUCING HORMONE!

There are insulin receptors on the liver, muscles and fat cells. The first place the sugar is deposited is in the liver and muscles for short-term energy use. When these stores are full the insulin receptors take the excess sugar out of the bloodstream and, with nowhere else to safely put it, transport the sugar to the fat cells which in turn leads to fat and thus weight-gain!

If you do a lot of exercise or are naturally busy and are energetic throughout the day, you may burn off much of the excess sugar stored from eating wheat and other refined carbs. However, the older you get, the harder this becomes and because the pancreas is constantly overworked the excess sugar gets turned into dangerous visceral fat.

Look around at how many people over the age of thirty five (and getting younger) have developed a bulge surrounding their midriff. Even the slimmest people can have a pot belly. For most, they are unaware that the protruding stomach, that will not shift even after diets and endless sit-ups, has been born from having repetitive blood sugar spikes following a lifelong consumption of wheat.

The toast you eat for breakfast, sandwich for lunch and pasta for evening meal may seem harmless, even healthy if its wholegrain, but it is these wheat-formed foods that are making you overweight, ill and miserable. In fact, specialists in America are discovering 70% of illnesses can be traced back to wheat and gluten (found in wheat) and 7 out of 10 are intolerant to it.
